At SafeLink Alberta, our mission is to reduce the harms associated with sexual activity and substance use by offering low-barrier, non-judgmental, and informed programs and services. We believe that everyone deserves access to healthcare services and support, regardless of their background or lifestyle.

Central to this mission are our dedicated volunteers, whose tireless efforts and unwavering commitment make a profound impact on the lives of vulnerable community members. This Canadian National Volunteer Week, we celebrate our outstanding volunteers who make a positive impact in their communities.

National Volunteer Week – April 27 to May 3, 2025

The theme for National Volunteer Week 2025, Volunteers Make Waves, celebrates the powerful impact of individual and collective volunteer efforts across Canada. Like waves in constant motion, every volunteer’s contribution—big or small—creates ripples of positive change, building on past efforts to strengthen communities, foster resilience, and enhance well-being. Each unique act of volunteering adds vibrancy and momentum to a broader movement for good. During NVW 2025, we come together to recognize the vital role volunteers play in shaping a more inclusive, connected, and thriving society.

“I’m grateful for the chance to make a difference through Safelink Alberta and be part of a team that truly cares.”

The Role of a Volunteer

Volunteering is a powerful way to give back, and it also offers numerous benefits for those who take the initiative. When you volunteer, you develop new skills, expand your professional network, and gain valuable experiences that can enhance your career and personal growth. Beyond the personal rewards, volunteering strengthens communities, fosters connections, and creates positive change where it is needed most. Whether you have an hour or a day to give, your time can make a real difference—and you’ll likely find that it transforms you too.

Our volunteers are the cornerstone of SafeLink Alberta’s initiatives. They engage in various activities, including assembling condom packs and educational materials, as well as assisting with fundraising events such as World AIDS Day.

These tasks may seem simple, but they play a crucial role in promoting ways to reduce the harms associated with sexual activity and substance use. By making condom packs that are distributed throughout the city, our volunteers help reduce the risk of sexually transmitted blood-borne infections and empower individuals to make informed choices about their sexual health. If you have a particular skill that you believe would make a difference, we would love to chat with you.

Fundraising Initiatives

Fundraising is another vital aspect of our work. Volunteers help organize and run events that generate the necessary funds to sustain our programs. Whether it is a night of entertainment, a third-party drag show, the Drag Me to Cowboys Stamped event, or our casino, walking in the Pride Parade, or selling 50/50’s at the Taboo Sex Show.

These efforts ensure that we can continue providing essential services to those in need. These initiatives not only raise money and awareness but also foster a sense of community and solidarity among participants.

“Volunteering has always been important to me. I have been helping out in my community since I was 14 and I love finding ways to contribute. I volunteered with the SHARP Foundation at events and with the Imperial Sovereign Court of the Chinook Arch, raising money for chosen charities. One of those charities was SafeLink Alberta. I became a SafeLink Alberta volunteer when my friend Jax asked if I’d be interested in supporting their work. I really enjoy volunteering here because there are so many ways to get involved. I’ve assisted at the casino, sold 50/50 tickets at fundraisers during local drag shows, and had a blast at condom packing night where I met great people. Condom packing is especially meaningful to me because someone close to me passed away from AIDS. Knowing that I’m helping create safer sex packages to prevent STBBI’s is incredibly important to me. Volunteering at Safelink Alberta gives me a chance to give back even when I can’t make financial donations. Please consider joining the condom package making nights-It’s a fantastic way to meet people and do something valuable for the community.”

The Impact of Volunteerism

The impact of volunteerism extends beyond the immediate task at hand. It fosters a sense of belonging and purpose among volunteers, who often find that their involvement enriches their own lives as much as it benefits others. Volunteering offers an opportunity to develop new skills, build meaningful relationships, and contribute to a cause that is greater than oneself.

To encapsulate the spirit of volunteerism, consider this profound quote by Helen Keller: “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.” This sentiment perfectly captures the essence of our volunteer program at SafeLink Alberta. It is through collective efforts and shared dedication that we can achieve remarkable outcomes and positive change in our communities.

“Volunteering with Safelink Albert has been a great way to get out and meet new people while doing something positive, helping others, spreading awareness and preventing HIV. It is a fun, welcoming and inclusive environment. Small acts of kindness can make a big difference.”
