Alternatively, Calgarians can visit their regular or nearest clinic and ask their practitioner for a standard HIV test. Tests performed at clinics may take 48 hours or longer to get the result. Other locations for standard testing are:
National HIV Testing Day is organized by HIV Community Link and the Centre for Sexuality in partnership with Safeworks and the Alex. Calgary will observe National HIV Testing Day for the first time, joining other North-American cities in promoting HIV testing on June 27 as an annual occasion to encourage people to know their status. The Canadian AIDS Society is the organization spearheading this new initiative at the national level.
Testing is a critical tool in addressing HIV. Regular screening, as a routine part of personal health care, can significantly help reduce the number of new infections in the community. There have been approximately 80,500 HIV diagnoses in Canada, and Alberta has the 3rd highest national rate of new HIV diagnoses, according to the 2014 data. 1 in 5 people living with HIV don’t know they have it.
