SafeLink Alberta wishes to express our unwavering support for 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. It disturbs us to witness the hostility towards Trans people and the resurgence of homophobic views in Alberta.
It’s important to acknowledge the emotional and psychological toll these situations take. Standing up against misinformation and prejudice is exhausting for our communities. Thank you to those who counter-protested the 1MillionMarch4Children. Your courage and resilience are invaluable.
To address those harbouring and expressing anti-2SLGBTQIA+ views – holding these views is causing actual harm to people. They are also contrary to scientific consensus and the medical community’s best practices.
Gender-affirming care is vital for individuals of all ages. The lack of it informs our work every day. The ramifications of unacceptance persist for a lifetime. It can affect an individual’s housing, career prospects, and ability to receive quality healthcare. Every day, 2SLGBTQIA+ people experience discrimination and stigma. This is not an abstract or distant issue; it has tangible effects on their health and well-being. Creating spaces of inclusion saves lives.
Gender and sexual identity are essential components of one’s identity. Transgender and queer individuals are not abstract concepts. They are our neighbours, friends, family, co-workers, and integral members of our community.
SafeLink Alberta is a safe space for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. If you need support, visit our Calgary Drop-in Space or Medicine Hat Drop-in Space. We offer case management, safer sex and safer use supplies, and emotional support to our priority populations.
We encourage you to take action to support the 2SLGBTQIA+ Community. Along with us, make your views supporting Trans rights and 2SLGBTQIA+ rights known to your friends, family, school boards, and local representatives.
