This two-part training series provides a foundational understanding of substance use and its impact in Canada, with a focus on reducing stigma and promoting compassionate support.

The first session, An Introduction to Substance Use and Criminalized Drugs of Canada, explores the root causes of the drug toxicity crisis, commonly used substances, and the myths that fuel discrimination. The second session, Supporting Canadians Who Use Substances, builds on this knowledge by introducing safer use practices and practical strategies for supporting people who use substances with empathy and respect.

The Substance Use Series

1) An Introduction to Substance Use and Criminalized Drugs of Canada

This foundational course is the first in a two-part series, introducing participants to the factors driving Canada’s current drug toxicity epidemic. Participants will examine Canadian statistics on accidental drug poisonings and explore criminalized drugs most affecting the epidemic. The training will highlight commonly used substances, examine the benefits and risks of substance use, and address myths that contribute to stigma and discrimination.

2) Supporting Canadians Who Use Substances

This course is the second in a two-part series. Participants will learn about safer substance use practices and safer substance use equipment, examine the complexities of substance use, and sharpen their understanding of how to best support individuals who use substances.

This course is offered through our Individual Fee-for-Service Training program.

These trainings are modified versions of our fee-for-service training program for individuals. At SafeLink Alberta Calgary quarterly, they are perfect for professionals seeking a certificate. They offer in-depth learning at an affordable price.
