February is Black History month and it is a time to celebrate the history of African descendants in North America and to showcase their art and skill.
AIDS Calgary’s African Communities Project, in partnership with Afrikadey!, has several events lined up for this very important period on Calgary’s black calendar.
A symposium showcasing the arts will be held at the Public Library on MacLeod trail. The performers will portray different genres of black art including music, spoken word, drama and dance. This event will be on Friday, February 15 at 6 p.m. and admission is free.
On Sunday, February 17, Olympic Plaza will be the venue for a fun filled event called Africans on Ice. This event will give new immigrants an opportunity to check out their skill on ice. New immigrants will have an opportunity to go where none of their grandparents have gone. This is an opportunity for them to learn how to skate and have fun on ice. They will also party with their friends and will be music provided by a DJ.
This event which starts at 2 p.m. and skates will be provided at no cost to all participants.
African Communities Project will have booths at both events and will give out reading material in six languages on HIV and AIDS.
